The terms ‘shower niche’ and ‘shower recess’ are sometimes used interchangeably, but they actually mean different things!

A shower niche refers to a recessed shelf in the cavity of a shower wall – a finished ‘nook’ in which to store items like shampoo and body wash. A shower recess refers to the entire shower cubicle, including the walls and shower base used to make an enclosed shower.

The Niche Man explains it some more and provides some examples in this short video.
