Shower niche shapes fit for The Block

As Season 16 of The Block unfolds, we’re enjoying watching creativity run wild on the show. This year’s contestants are tasked with renovating houses true to the style of a certain decade, ranging from the 1910s to the 1950s.

This period was transformative for the humble Australian bathroom. It saw the bathroom establish its place as an essential, indoor room of the house (goodbye outhouses!), proper plumbing become a given (thank goodness), and bold, colourful designs come into the mix. Hence the startling pink or green baths you’ll still find at large in many older Australian homes.

Watching The Block contestants really get their creative juices flowing as they consider different period designs has inspired us to share some out-of-the-box ideas for shower niches. The shower niche is fast becoming a key design feature of the modern bathroom, offering style and practicality.

Yes, the ‘shampoo shelf’ can do so much more than just store shampoo, and it can come in an array of fun, interesting shapes to suit your bathroom’s style.

The Arch Niche

Tall, elegant and stylish, an arch niche offers practicality and aesthetic. You can add glass shelves to increase storage space, while retaining the artistic essence of the shape.

The Corner Niche

A corner niche can be built into your shower, offering a useful ‘nook’ to store products. Not only does it make excellent use of space, it looks great too.

The Really Long Niche

A long rectangular niche can be used as space for storing items while acting as a key design feature for the bathroom. Adding LED strip lights can draw the eye to this even further.

The Curved Niche

Why play it safe when it comes to your bathroom design? A curved niche opens a world of possibility (but it’s so cutting-edge we can’t find an image of a finished one yet!).

This curved shower is a great example of where you could install a curved niche.

The Square Niche

Possibilities are endless when it comes to a square niche. Install multiple squares to create a stunning design feature, or play with sizing and finish.

The Rectangle Niche

No doubt our most in-demand style of niche, the standard rectangle shape can be used in a variety of ways in the bathroom. Install horizontally as a shelf, or vertically for an eye-catching bathroom design element. You can jazz it up further with interesting tile designs or finishes such as metal or glass.

The Hexagonal Niche

It’s a niche shape yet to be fully appreciated for its style potential. The hexagon niche can be installed anywhere in the bathroom, and brings to mind bold geometric designs of the 1940s.
